What Life Is Like In The Eyes of an Ambivert

I’ve always been asked the question “Are you an extrovert or an introvert?“. I’d usually hesitate, and to be honest, my answer swayed based on my current mood. I leaned toward “extrovert” when I was more happy or in a more social setting. Then at times I leaned toward  “introvert” in the comfort of my home, behind a screen being a potato. The true answer is that I’m both; so that must make me an ambivert.

Now for those of you who don’t know what an ambivert is, it’s defined as a person whose personality has a balance of extrovert and introvert features. It’s really hard to explain how you can actually be both, but I found the perfect article from Buzzfeed that helps describe exactly what I mean : 21 Signs You Might Actually Be An Ambivert. It’s actually really surprising how strongly this relates… to me, hah!

For all of you who are lazy and don’t actually want to read the Buzzfeed article, I’ll save you the heart ache and break it down for you. Let’s call it Ambivert 101, shall we?

Here are some common qualities of an ambivert:

  • You love meeting new people, which is pretty odd because majority of the time you also just… well, hate people. Yes, hate is a strong word but it’s also just so fitting. Let’s be real.
  • As long as you have friends by your side, you’re actually completely fine with talking to strangers. BUT, when you’re alone, suddenly you lose all confidence and get socially awkward. Thus making things awkward even when it’s not.
  • You’re often confused with being the shy, quiet type but what most people don’t realize, you can turn out to also be the loud, obnoxious person in the room. Yeah, you’re that person.
  • If you’re in a group of people and a topic comes up that you can contribute to, you get excited and chat away forrreeeeveeer but the moment the conversation moves, you’re back to being quiet as a mouse. Listening and observing but not offering anything.
  • You are super grateful for all the people in your life and all the support. Completely full of love, but sometimes you just need a break. Space. Alone time. Being a potato binge-watching shows. Just “you” time.
  • But too much alone time gets you down in the dumps. What a conundrum.
  • You find yourself being able to switch from being professional and serious to fun and wild. Like there’s two of you. Oh wait, maybe that’s just a Gemini issue LOL.
  • Sometimes you choose to balance others, or sometimes you choose to mirror them. For example, when they’re loud, you’re quiet. Vice versa. OR when they’re loud, so are you. It’s a mix.

Hope that just about sums up what an ambivert is. There’s plenty of stuff out there, so before you suddenly start to google what an ambivert is and how to tell if you’re really one, you should seriously read that Buzzfeed article!!! If you know any Buzzfeed article, it’s filled with fun GIFs and images so it’s a fun read. For reals.

Regardless if you’re an extrovert, introvert, or an ambivert (like me) you should always be proud of who you are. You are you and that’s always enough. Remember that 😉

But on the DL, if you just discovered you’re also an ambivert like me, or if you knew all along and thought you were alone, raise your hand up high! Embrace it!!!!

  1. This is actually the first time I hear someone describe them as Ambivert. I would definitely consider myself and an extrovert. My every day life is definitely surrounded by lots of friends and people and my every day is all relationship based. I do enjoy my solitude time though. Especially when I’m traveling. But I don’t think I’m bi-polar enough to describe myself as ambivert. After reading your post, I think you are definite more of a gemini girl, rather than ambivert babe!

  2. You basically just described me! As outgoing and social as I am, I also have a tank of how much I can tolerate people. With blogging and events, I try to find the balance between putting myself out there while staying true to who I am in terms of my introvertness. I guess this is why you and I click 🙂

  3. OMG, this is totally me! I had no idea that a word even existed to describe my extro and introverted characteristics. I am an ambivert and proud! As I read through your descriptions I kept saying, “that’s me!” It’s funny because people think that I am an extrovert but I always see myself as an introvert. This totally explains it. I can’t wait to read the article in full. Thank you! xoxo, Christine

  4. Jenny I may be an ambivert sometimes too. Thank you for sharing, it makes you stop and think about each point you made. I have more characteristics of an extrovert I think. Love reading every one.

  5. I always considered myself an introvert, but as I grew older I’ve noticed more extroverted qualities in me, maybe because of my current career path. After reading the descriptions of an ambivert, it kind of made sense. Thank you for the clarification haha 🙂

  6. After reading both your post and then heading over to Buzzfeed to read their article I must say I’m an ambivert leaning towards extrovert. I’m mostly all over the place, but I do need a lot of me time and just shut out the rest of the world for a couple of days so I guess there’s a bit of introvert in me too.
Thanks for teaching me a new word for the day!

  7. As I was reading this, I was cracking up laughing because this is a literal definition of myself! I can’t imagine how truthful it was,and I lean more towards an introvert! I’ve gotten good about knowing my limits and I think it’s cool that a space like Buzzfeed could explain it so clearly and concisely! So many other bloggers I’ve met are the same way, which makes it even more relatable!

  8. This is my first time hearing of the term ambivert and that definitely fits my personality to a T! I love people, but I also hate people and I am very outgoing, but I can also be shy at times. I am so glad you shared this article with us. I finally found something, that I share almost all characteristics with!

  9. LOL I always thought I was an introvert until someone told me I’m more like an ambivert and at first I was like uhh what? LOL. I totally have a better idea now after reading your post and can totally relate to a lot of the characteristics! I love socializing but usually do better in one-on-ones and small groups of people that I’m comfortable with… otherwise you can find me in the corner lol! Having friends by my side at events is a must as I don’t usually like to go to events by myself. #awkward… haha! I enjoy my alone time and consider myself to be a massive home body but after being at home for too long I get antsy and just want to go out and see different things/people. Lets just say that I think I finally discovered who I really am 😉 xo, sharon

  11. Oh my goodness, thanks for this! I never new there was an actual term for these characteristics that I can totally relate to. I always just described myself as an “introvert with extrovert tendencies” haha. Will head to the Buzzfeed article now!
